THE ROYAL ORB was crafted by a goldsmith at a Spanish outpost during the journey from the New World to Europe or Asia on a Colombian or Spanish treasure ship. The abundance of emeralds from the Muzo mine makes Colombia a more likely origin for this piece.
The orb is a sphere with a cross. The sphere symbolizes the universe or world, while the cross represents Christ, symbolizing Christian authority. Traditionally, the cross is used in two scenarios: as a symbol of Christian monarchs’ royal power or to signify Christ’s sovereignty over the universe. This orb was likely a processional orb, used in annual parades from churches to celebrate Easter or saints.
All 37 emeralds on the orb are from Colombia. King Charles of Spain ordered Muzo to be the royal emerald mine of the New World. Muzo town was not only the center of emerald mining but also home to many Spanish royal bureaucracies, such as the Royal Mines and Counting House. The pear-shaped emeralds on the orb have the same cut as those on 17th-century Spanish crosses and brooches.
THE ATOCHA CROSS, a 22K yellow gold and emerald cross, represents one of the most precious artifacts from the 1622 Nuestra Señora de Atocha shipwreck. This rare and magnificent cross was discovered in the hull of the ill-fated ship.
THE ATOCHA RING, another elegant and exquisite ring, speaks for itself. The emerald, bright in color and weighing about 2.5 carats, originates from Colombia’s famous Muzo mine. Set in a gold ring, it’s typical of the wealthy class in the 17th century.
A Top-Tier Alliance
In early 2017, a brilliant relationship between two unique and precious gemstones was born. Muzo emeralds were combined with extremely rare Argyle pink diamonds. Both gemstones possess stunning beauty and come from responsible and ethical sources.
A 13.20-carat Muzo emerald ring, surrounded by Argyle pink diamonds, sold for $1.2 million at a Christie’s auction. As connoisseurs’ appetites grew for more jewelry featuring special Colombian emeralds and rare pink diamonds, the series was born and continued for four generations.
